Coenzyme Q10 sits in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, which is the final step of producing ATP. That is a genuine and central role in energy production, and it is the entire basis of the marketing.
The gap in the argument is that your body makes CoQ10, and in a healthy man with adequate levels, adding more does not make mitochondria produce more ATP. Levels do fall with age and are reduced by statins, which is where the plausible use cases sit.

Take it with a meal containing fat. CoQ10 is fat-soluble and absorption on an empty stomach is poor enough to waste the dose.
Ubiquinol versus ubiquinone. Ubiquinol is the reduced, more bioavailable form and costs more. Ubiquinone is converted in the body and is fine at adequate doses. If you are over 40 and want the better-absorbed option, ubiquinol is the defensible upgrade; it is not a different ingredient.
Give it time. Blood levels plateau over several weeks, and trials run for one to three months. Judge it at eight weeks, not at three days.

Get medical advice rather than supplementing if tiredness is new and unexplained, getting steadily worse, or comes with breathlessness, chest symptoms, dizziness, unexplained weight loss, a lump, night sweats or blood in stool or urine. Persistent fatigue is one of the most common presenting symptoms of conditions that need diagnosis, not supplementation — start with blood tests for fatigue.
The evidence for general tiredness in healthy men is weak, which is awkward because that is what most people buy it for. The better-supported uses are statin-associated muscle symptoms, heart failure as an adjunct, and migraine prevention.
Typically 100–200mg a day. Higher doses up to 300mg appear in clinical trials but are not needed for general use. Take it with a meal containing fat, because absorption on an empty stomach is poor.
Ubiquinol is the reduced form and absorbs better, particularly with age, but it costs more. Ubiquinone is converted in the body and works fine at adequate doses — the form matters less than taking it with fat.
Four to twelve weeks. Blood levels plateau over several weeks and trials typically run one to three months, so anything you notice within days is not the supplement.
It is the most studied reason to take it, since statins reduce CoQ10 synthesis. Speak to your GP first, and never stop a statin in order to test the supplement.
